The PumpHouse: Prima Facie

June 18th, 2024 - June 22nd, 2024

Tessa Ensler loves her job. She’s worked her way up from a working-class background to being a top criminal defense barrister at the top of her game – prosecuting, cross-examining and winning in the courtroom with her quick wit and intelligence. Fighting to defend those pleading not guilty – including securing freedom for men accused of rape and sexual assault. Innocent until proven guilty is, after all, the bedrock of human rights. An unexpected event however forces Tessa to confront the very system she has spent her life believing and working within – a system where the lines of patriachal power and burden of proof are not set up to accommodate the lived experience of sexual assault survivors. Acclaimed Oliver and Tony award-winning play, Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie is an unforgettable story and one-woman tour de force that has the power to question the structure of the legal system and takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience conflict within the system as we know it. Prima Facie was first produced by Griffin Theatre Company in May 2019 at the SBW Stables Theatre followed by the award-winning 2022 West End premiere at the Harold Pinter Theatre which then traveled to the Golden Theatre on Broadway in 2023. Prima Facie is currently being translated and performed all over the world and in 2023 was also released into a book. Directed by NZ acting royalty Michael Hurst and performed by Cassandra Woodhouse, NZ Theatre Company is honoured to bring Prima Facie to the NZ stage and continue the call to action that this story is demanding worldwide. “SOMEWHERE. SOMETIME. SOMEHOW. SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE.” Content Warning: Prima Facie includes references to sexual assault. Recommended for audiences aged 15 years and above, parent or guardian advised. Run Time: 1 hour, 30min with no interval Strict lockout: no admittance once the performance has started.

Bruce Mason Centre: Forest Song and Don Quixote

June 20th, 2024

By popular demand, The Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine are returning to New Zealand this June and will present again their double bill of Forest Song & Don Quixote. The audience response to their performances in 2023 was literally amazing with standing ovations following every performance. The Grand Kyiv Ballet was founded in 2014 by Artistic Director Oleksandr Stoianov, previously a principal dancer with the National Opera of Ukraine for a decade. The Grand Kyiv Ballet has toured extensively throughout the world including the USA, China, Europe, Scandinavia and South America. Performances are regularly attended by Royal families, politicians and many public figures. From the first days of the war, the Grand Kyiv Ballet have performed charity tours in France, Sweden, Norway, South America, Poland and the USA. The Grand Kyiv Ballet are pleased to present ballet performances of Forest Song & Don Quixote to Australian audiences. Ukrainian ballet is an integral part of their culture, with Forest Song being a cultural showpiece. The professionalism of the artists allows them to perform high technical levels whilst portraying the positive and soulful emotions of the dance. The Grand Kyiv Ballet strive to continue capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide. Act One – The Ukrainian showpiece…Forest Song This legendary ballet, which for over 75 years remains not only the pride of Ukraine, but also of world choreography and cultural heritage. Forest Song is based on the Ukrainian folk story with music by Ukrainian composer Mikhail Skorulskyi, who created an anthem for wildlife, nature and true love, to which the main characters aspire. Forest Song is a magical love story, full of mysticism alongside the conflict between the human world and nature. It tells a tale of love between a fantastical forest creature Mavka and a man, Lukash. The story is of the fearless and brave Mavka, who longs for peace in her world, just as Ukraine longs for peace in her country today. The ballet is filled with complex duets, fouettés and incredible choreographic pieces. Acts Two & Three – Don Quixote This flamboyant and festive Spanish ballet is a much-loved romantic comedy. It tells the story of a courageous but troubled man’s quest for love. Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza set off on an adventure together hoping to achieve great feats and bring glory to his name. Gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes, breath-taking dancers, and an inspiring music score ensures that Don Quixote is a not-to-be-missed experience.
