The PumpHouse: Auckland Shakespeare in the Park

January 22nd, 2022 - February 19th, 2022

William Shakespeare, The Bard of Avon, a man who needs no introduction. His stories have stood the test of time. But they were never written to be read – they were written to be experienced! And where better to see it than a traditional outdoor amphitheatre in the heart of Takapuna. There are two fabulous plays on offer this summer. As the sun goes down you’ll be treated to sumptuous costumes, creative production design and passionate performances by a talented troop of local actors. Proudly presented by Shoreside Theatre – this summer we are thrilled to invite you to return to The PumpHouse Outdoor Amphitheatre for a special night of Shakespeare. Two Gentlemen of Verona - Directed by James Bell: Valentine and Proteus, two firm friends from Verona, find their relationship put to the test when they both fall in love with the same woman. When Proteus’s father sends him away from Verona and the woman he loves, he finds himself falling for Valentine’s beloved, Silvia. Both men forget their friendship and wrangle for her affection, but, after a series of mishaps and mistaken identities, the two couples are reunited and reconciled in marriage. The Merchant of Venice - Directed by Trevor Sharp The wheels of this clever and controversial comedy are set in motion when Bassanio, a poor nobleman in Venice, needs money to woo the beautiful heiress Portia. He asks his friend Antonio for a loan, but Antonio has invested his funds in ships overseas. The moneylender, Shylock, offers the cash on the condition that he will take a pound of Antonio’s flesh if the loan is not repaid within three months. Antonio goes bankrupt and Portia steps in, disguised as a young male lawyer, to save the day. Covid-19 Promise We’re doing our best to make sure Shakespeare in the Park can go ahead safely in 2022. If the season is interrupted by a Covid-19 Lockdown and we can’t perform, we’ll refund 100% of the price you paid. All of our cast/crew and volunteers are vaccinated and we will be following all new rules about hosting large events. 🚦 To attend a performance at The PumpHouse Theatre you must be able to show your vaccine pass on arrival at the theatre. You will also be encouraged to wear a face mask.
