The PumpHouse: The Great Piratical Rumbustification

April 13th, 2024 - April 27th, 2024

Hoist the Flag of Fun & Mayhem Shiver me timbers! The pirates are restless, yearning for a grand piratical adventure. “Oh, for a pirate party!” they proclaim. But, as any good pirate knows, a proper pirate party must be a stolen one. So now, get ready to set sail into the high seas of imagination as Margaret Mahy’s delightful tale, The Great Piratical Rumbustification comes to life in a swashbuckling stage performance by Tim Bray Theatre Company. Join our young hero, Oliver Terrapin, as he opens up the doors of his oblivious parents’ home for a party – a party with real pirates! Mayhem ensues in this rollicking, rumbunctious rumpus of an escapade by Tim Bray Theatre Company that promises the most piratical fun you’ve had in years. Yo ho ho! “Perhaps (Tim) Bray’s most noteworthy quality as an adapter/director of children’s stories is his uncanny ability to find the essence of the works he adapts and to find ways to translate this to the stage. His work with Mahy’s quirky creations is no exception. It’s been my pleasure to see many of (Tim) Bray’s children’s theatre works but I have to say The Great Piratical Rumbustification is quite simply his best effort yet and it’s all down to harmony.” – Lexie Matheson, Theatreview -- For NZSL Interpreted, Audio Described, and Sensory Relaxed performance dates and accessibility resources, head to timbray.org.nz/accessible-performances/ Costume Parade Dress up in character! We love to see imaginations running wild and encourage our young audience to dress up as their favourite Great Piratical Rumbustification characters. We will take a moment to show off the costumes onstage with a parade at the start of the performance. Gift a Seat™ You can make a difference to children by letting them experience the joys of live theatre through donating to Gift a Seat™. Come join The Barden Party for their finale show of the 2023/24 season, an after-party to acknowledge their achievements this year (Adelaide Fringe Winner: Best Theatre/Physical Theatre: Week 1), connect with the NZ performing arts community and celebrate Shakespeare himself on his birthday! Award-winning theatre company The Barden Party is bringing their usual fun-loving spin to Romeo & Juliet, and filling Shakespeare’s most famous play with their hilarious, heartfelt antics. Reimagined as a modern-bohemian romance set to Kiwi and Australian music you know and love, and that you’ve never heard before… You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll dance the night away. This show is also a fundraiser for their ongoing operational costs and for their ambition to take this show to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2025 and to connect with other directors, producers, actors or sponsors who may be interested in working with The Barden Party in the future. All are welcome. The bar will be open post-show and The Barden Party will be providing a cheeky cake for Shakespeare’s Birthday Party. Post-show, other performers are welcome to hop onstage to perform a monologue or talk about their work in honour of Shakespeare’s Birthday, and we can all celebrate together.
