Bruce Mason Centre

Your guide to night out the Bruce Mason Centre

Takapuna’s Bruce Mason Centre is hosting a fantastic lineup of shows this season. A memorable night out is about more than just the show itself. It’s about the entire experience, from what you wear to where you dine.

This is your backstage pass to the theatre.

Getting ready for the show

Mind the time: Don’t rush your night out. Arrive early enough to actually enjoy it! Give yourself a buffer to find your seats, grab a drink, and soak in the atmosphere. Small rituals can help you be present for the night ahead.

The dress code: It’s important to be comfortable, so you can enjoy the show without any distractions, and there’s no strict dress code. But let’s be honest, sometimes getting ready is half the fun! This is your chance to turn a night out into a special occasion. Find the balance between style and practicality. A little tip: theatres can get chilly from the air conditioning, so think about layers.

Pre-show dining: A night out starts before the show. The Bruce Mason Centre is a short stroll from an array of restaurants and bars. Consider making a reservation for an early dinner before the show.

Logistics: Plan your journey. Check out parking options nearby or use public transport to avoid the hassle of finding a spot.

Snack smarter: A little pick-me-up from the bar during the break can make all the difference.

Quiet, please!: Before the show, make sure your phone is completely silenced. Remember that the light from a screen, even for a moment, can be distracting to others in a dark theatre.

Opening night: Want to experience electric energy on the stage? Go to opening night. The atmosphere and anticipation of the performers can create a high-stakes show where the unexpected is part of the magic.

Your post-show plan: The curtain has fallen but your evening doesn’t have to end. Head out for a cocktail, a glass of wine or a decadent dessert to extend the conversation and discuss the performance.

A local legacy: The story of Bruce Mason

Bruce Mason was a playwright, actor and critic who grew up right here in Takapuna and this centre is a fantastic tribute to his work. The venue itself was a hard-won victory for the community, taking years of determined effort to build and finally opening in 1996. There was serious consideration to turn the site into a carpark instead!

Mason’s most famous play, The End of the Golden Weather, was a love letter to the Takapuna of his childhood. He gave many solo performances of this masterpiece and the centre was officially opened with a performance of the play.

Next time you are in the main foyer, take a moment to check out his original writing desk and typewriter.
