The PumpHouse: Creative Talks - Tessa Duder, CNZM OBE

Tessa Duder, CNZM OBE Author Tessa Duder trained as a journalist and has published more than forty works of fiction and non-fiction for both children and adults, plays and anthologies. Her best-known work Alex (1987) was adapted for a 1993 movie, and recent work features biographies of Margaret Mahy, Sir Peter Blake, Auckland’s ‘First Lady’ Sarah Mathew and James Cook. Her latest, an historical novel The Sparrow, is set in early Auckland. Her numerous awards include the Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal, the Katherine Mansfield Fellowship to Menton, an Artists to Antarctica award, the OBE, an honorary doctorate from the University of Waikato, the Prime Minister’s Award (Fiction) and in 2020 the CNZM. She serves on the boards of the Storylines Children’s Literature Trust and is Vice-patron of the Spirit of Adventure Trust.

Takapuna Winter Lights will keep winter alive for four nights this July. The fully assessable, all-ages outdoor sensory experience is a free event in the heart of Takapuna that will bring communities and families together, with light installations, performances and music and it is on its way to becoming an annual highlight on the Auckland arts and cultural calendar. Takapuna Winter Lights will be held at Takapuna’s new Waiwharariki Anzac Square, 25-28 July 2024 and is proudly brought to you by the Takapuna Beach Business Association, Auckland Council, SILO, AMD, Go Media and Barfoot & Thompson. Lights are on from 5-10pm, so dress up warm, pop in for a bite & drink at your favourite restaurants and bars and let your senses guide you through Takapuna Winter Lights 2024. The PumpHouse: Creative Talks - Alan Reekie, QSM

Alan Reekie, QSM Arts Governance Expert Alan has been involved with performing arts governance for many years. He was a committee member of the North Shore Performing Arts Society since the 1980s and awarded Life Membership in 2018. These competitions enabled many young people to participate in the performing arts in Auckland and help establish the careers of many singers in New Zealand. Alan has a background in accounting which has well placed him to develop his knowledge of constitutional documents, keeping up with changing regulatory requirements, his willingness to help others acquire the skills needed to govern effectively, and for stepping in to help with organisational matters as required. Alan serves as Secretary of the North Shore Theatre and Arts Trust and is a life Member of the Trust Alan is going to share his history with the arts and The PumpHouse in particular.

The PumpHouse: Creative Talks - Stu Bagby

Stu Bagby Poet Formerly a gravedigger, Stu has more recently been occupied part-time as a tutor and reviewer and poet. Stu is a former Poetry Society Competition winner and has been published both as a poet and as an editor. His books have been listed among the best of their year by both the Sunday Star Times and the NZ Listener. He is the organiser and MC of the annual Poetry Day event held at Takapuna Library. Stu will read from and discuss, in a non-academic way, his poetry and that of other poets he admires and hopes to show that poetry need not be elitist or difficult.
