It’s rugby season – where can you catch the game?

This season, Takapuna is serving up a front-row seat for every kind of rugby fan.

Whether you want to analyse the breakdown in crystal-clear high-def or soak up the sun in a courtyard with a cheeky eye on the score, we’ve done the scouting for you.

Let’s check out the best sports bars and clubs with a great screen for the big game.

The super-fan sanctuary: Cousin Scott’s

This American-style sports bar is a cathedral of high-definition, boasting over 20 screens that make sure you have a great view from every stool in the house.

It’s a high-energy, loud and an unapologetically sporty atmosphere.

Food: Think buffalo wings, loaded fries, and ribs.

The luck of the Irish: Florrie McGreal’s

This Irish pub offers a soulful warmth you won’t find in a modern sports bar. It’s a match-day experience with a bit of grit and a lot of heart.

When a big game is on, the pub hums with a specific kind of stadium energy. It’s the ultimate spot for those who want to feel the action.

Food: A proper sunday roast or a Guinness-heavy beef pie. It’s comfort food at its best.

Rooftop view: Takapuna surf club

Watch the game without losing sight of the ocean. This rooftop garden bar is great for a Saturday afternoon kick-off where the sea breeze is as much a part of the experience as the footy.

Food: Pizzas, nachos and a wide range of beers and cocktails.

Coming soon: Goldie’s Bar & Yard

Can we get a “yeehaw”? Goldie’s is currently in pre-season training but it’s already the talk of the village.

Right in the center of the Hurstmere Road hustle, it’s going to be the perfect spot for those who want to watch the game, but might also want to slip out to the beach at halftime.

Food: The menu is yet to be finalised but we’re expecting some Western-style goodness.

Quick tips for a great game night

Half-time shuffle: Takapuna is beautifully compact. If your first choice is standing-room only and you want more space, the walk between most of these spots is less than a few minutes. A quick dash at the break might land you a better vantage point for the second half.

The pre-game: If you want a break from standard pub grub, check out some of the best seafood around. Or if you need a quick sugar hit, try out the big bubble tea trend.

Afterwards: Win or lose, take the long way back via the beach. The sea air is either the perfect victory lap or the best way to cool down before heading home.
