Stand up paddle boards are the way to see the sea in style. Hire a paddle board, or bring your own and explore the coastline at your own pace (plus it’s a great core workout).
Keen to harness the wind? Wingfoiling is the new windsurfing! Hold on to a wing, jump on a board and get up and foiling just like the America’s Cup boats. You can even learn to wingfoil right here in Takapuna.
If you’re more of a petrolhead, then you know what they say: I’ve never seen anyone looking sad on a jet ski. Takapuna Jet Ski Hire can hook you up with the machinery and gear, so all you’ve got to worry about is blasting out over the waves.
If you’re looking for a more long-term watersport community experience, we’ve got some great options here on the Shore. The Takapuna Boat Club offers active memberships, giving you regular access to canoes, boards and waterside community. We’ve also got the Akarana Waka Ama club if you’d like to try your hand at the modern, racy version of traditional Māori waka paddling.
Shore-side upgrades: Comfort and convenience
The entire Takapuna beachside experience has been upgraded over the last couple of years. Even the most adventurous day needs modern necessities.
The brand-new beach amenities include beach bathrooms with showers. You can rinse off the salt and sand before heading to the next activity.
Right next to the beach, you’ll find a literal playground for the kids and a wide, grassy park perfect for playing games, throwing a frisbee or enjoying a picnic by the sea.
The town square renaissance
We’re lucky to have that “beachside town” feel here in the big city. The summer energy flows right up off the beach into the Takapuna town centre.
Hurstmere Road has also seen recent upgrades, and is bustling with eateries and boutique shops.
Takapuna is the perfect place to grab a coffee, sit back, and soak up the atmosphere before or after your beach session. It’s where the sea meets the street in the most spectacular way.
