Takapuna is emerging as a sophisticated shopping destination thanks to a revitalisation of its original shopping stretch along the city's backbone, Hurstmere Road.
Over recent years landmark buildings have been refurbished to now house leading edge retail outlets. Athletic wear shop lululemon has taken up residence in the original McKenzies Department store, while across the road Hall's Corner is now home to niche fashion and lifestyle store Superette, a bank, travel agent and menswear store, and reminiscent of its early beginnings, a bakery.
The historic wedge of land in the heart of the city originally housed William Henry Hall's bakery and tea rooms in 1907. It was one of Takapuna's founding businesses and is still pivotal today.
Located just off the main street, opposite Hall's Corner, is the multi-level Department Store. A modern take on department stores of old, here you will find designer labels and stores including Karen Walker, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Nike and Nom*D. Top Shop and Nature Baby stores are complemented with a hairdresser, beautician, wedding specialist and menswear store to round off to a complete shopping experience.
Every city needs a mall and Shore City is one of the North Shore's first malls. First opening it's doors in 1974 it now has 70 retail outlets, including Farmers, Whitcoulls, The Body Shop, Country Road, Max and Esprit and shoe stores Mi Piaci and Overland. Conveniently nestled amongst Takapuna's bars and restaurants the mall is still just an easy walk to the beach and offers plenty of free parking for shoppers.
The weekly outdoor Takapuna Market is a vibrant mix of fresh produce, brick-a-brac, food stalls and entertainers and is held every Sunday in a large public carpark in the centre of the city. Be there right on 9am for the best selection of the freshest fruit, vegetables, fish and flowers. Artisan product such as bread, sausages, olive oil, cheese and pastries are for sale, or browse the second hand goods for anything and everything from tools to trinkets.
