Unless you happen to live in the Middle East, polo matches played on sand are a rare sight in NZ. Here, the sport is more associated with green pastures, celebrities and stomping down divots at halftime.
However it did, in fact, originate from Persia around the fifth century, when it was played by guardsmen. So this summer you could say it is going back to its roots, holding Auckland's first matches at Papamoa Beach and will be back to host another summer event at the stunning Takapuna Beach.
